Hajj is the most physically demanding journey many Muslims will ever make. Over the core days — from 8 to 13 Dhul Hijjah — pilgrims move between Makkah, Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah, often on foot and in intense heat and crowds. Eating and drinking properly is part of staying safe.
This guide explains how food works during Hajj and how to prepare, based on the official structure of the pilgrimage.
How meals work in the Hajj camps
Pilgrims travelling with licensed Hajj service companies usually receive meals in their camps in Mina and Arafat as part of their package. Meal quality and timing vary by package, so check with your group leader what is included.
Restaurants and shops exist around Mina, but crowds are very large. Many pilgrims carry snacks to fill the gaps.
Day by day
- 8 Dhul Hijjah (Tarwiyah): travel to Mina. Eat properly and rest.
- 9 Dhul Hijjah (Arafat): the most important day. Pilgrims are not fasting on this day; eat light, stay hydrated and conserve energy for du'a.
- Night of 9–10 in Muzdalifah: pilgrims sleep in the open. Carry dates, bread, nuts and water.
- 10–13 Dhul Hijjah: stoning of the Jamarat, sacrifice, Tawaf al-Ifadah. Long walks — keep water and snacks with you.
What to pack
- Dates and dried fruit for quick energy.
- Nuts, biscuits and energy bars that do not melt.
- Oral rehydration salts.
- A refillable water bottle — water and Zamzam are distributed widely.
- Any medication and diabetic supplies in a small bag you always carry.
Heat and hydration
The Saudi Ministry of Health repeatedly warns pilgrims about heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Drink water regularly, use an umbrella, avoid walking at midday where possible and seek the medical centres located throughout the holy sites if you feel unwell.
Before and after Hajj in Makkah
In the days before and after Hajj, Makkah is extremely busy. Ordering food to your hotel saves long walks through crowds. On Feast Makkah you can pick your hotel and time delivery around prayer.
